I'm Gabe Garza with today's health news. New
research suggest, women may have benefits
when it comes to kidney health. Researchers
found that female hormones affect important
kidney enzymes. The scientists think that
these changes may have a protective effect
against kidney disease. The kidneys remove
excess water and waste products from the body.
However, 26 million Americans suffer from
chronic kidney disease, according to the National
Kidney Center. Previous research has indicated
differences in kidney failure between men
and women. Men are more likely to have high
blood pressure and chronic kidney disease
than pre-menopausal women of the same age.
Researchers found that during ovulation and
the menstrual period, two enzymes in the kidneys
were slightly elevated. Their theory is that
since female hormones cause physical changes
in the ovaries and uterus, the hormones may
have similar effects in the kidneys. These
hormones might cause kidney cells to regenerate.
