Hello, my name is Dr. Arash Rashidi I'm a nephrologist with Ohio Medical Group and North Ohio Health Center
I would like to take a moment and talk to you about chronic kidney disease and importance of chronic kidney
disease. Chronic kidney disease is one of the most common health problems in the United States.
Unfortunately, the mortality of chronic kidney disease is very high and we have many people with chronic kidney
disease in the United States. There are many risk factors for this disease: hypertension, high blood pressure
diabetes, and obesity. It is very important to recognize the patients who have chronic kidney disease because
early intervention can help these patients to have a better chance of survival in long term. And of course we
need to prevent and control the risk factors which end up causing chronic kidney disease. We need to make
sure that our blood sugar is under control if you have diabetes. We need to make sure that our blood pressure
is under control. We need to make sure that our cholesterol is under control. The smoking sensation
and weight reduction are major factors to minimize the risk of chronic kidney disease.
It might be a surprise for you knowing that mortality of chronic kidney disease is somehow higher than
many cancers which is under appreciated and unfortunately chronic kidney disease does not have any
symptom unless it is very advanced. Usually as a patient, when you have pain you seek medical attention
If you have a headache you go to your doctor but chronic kidney disease does not cause any symptom
usually. And when you have symptoms, usually its at an advanced stage. Sometimes we have early symptoms
like face swelling, leg swelling, or changing your ___ habits, but that is not really common.
And most of the patients with chronic kidney disease does not have symptoms. That is not good because it
ends up in late referral and as a result higher mortality. So not having any symptoms doesn't mean that you do
not have chronic kidney disease. So please make sure to discuss with your primary care physician about
chronic kidney disease and risk factors. And earlier for alternate nephrologists if it is needed.
