Check Your Kidney Health Manitoba! - What do the kidneys do? Approach 1

Check Your Kidney Health Manitoba!

One in 10 Manitobans have kidney disease.
That's about 130,000 people.
But many don't know it.
Since 2010, our dialysis patient population
has grown by almost 30 per cent.
And it grows every year.
The good news is the earlier we catch kidney disease,
the more options there are.
Blood and urine tests show how your kidneys are doing.
So see a doctor if you are at risk of kidney disease.
You're at risk if you have high blood pressure, diabetes,
or a family history of kidney disease.
High blood pressure and diabetes are the biggest
causes of kidney disease in Manitoba.
Talk to your doctor before you get sick.
Because there are options. We can work together
to keep your kidneys healthy as long as possible.

What do the kidneys do? Approach 1

>> A doctor speaks with a patient in his office.
>> So what do the kidneys do?
>> Well, you have two kidneys and
they're each about the size of your fist
and they're located on each side of your spine.
The kidneys are usually described simply as
filters but they do a lot more than that.
Their job really is to maintain the
composition of the blood at a constant level.
They do filter the blood and they remove waste
products and water and they produce urine
which is waste products and water.
But in addition to that, they
have many other functions.
They play a major role in controlling
blood pressure, they maintain a major role
in preventing you from becoming anemic,
and they also have a very important role
in maintaining the strength of your bones.
