Is there a connection between heart disease and kidney disease? - What Is Chronic Kidney Disease: Approach 1

Is there a connection between heart disease and kidney disease?

>> A doctor speaks with a patient in her office.
>> I had a heart attack two years ago.
Am I at risk for kidney disease?
>> Well when you have heart disease,
you are also at risk for kidney disease.
And on the other hand, people with kidney
disease are also at risk for heart disease.
So we will keep a close eye on your blood
pressure, trying to keep it at 130 over 80
or below, and do blood test and urine test
for your kidneys at least once a year.

What Is Chronic Kidney Disease: Approach 1

>> A doctor speaks with a patient in his office.
>> What is CKD?
>> CKD means chronic kidney disease.
Chronic kidney disease means
that the kidneys are damaged.
The most common causes of chronic kidney
disease are diabetes and high blood pressure.
People who have diabetes and high blood
pressure have chronic kidney disease
because the small blood vessels in
the kidney are damaged in such a way
that the kidney can no longer
filter as well as it should.
The damage tends to occur very slowly
and most people have no symptoms.
They don't feel any way until the
kidney damage is very advanced.
If the kidney damage progresses over time, the
kidneys could be unable to maintain the health
of the individual with kidney disease.
>> Okay.
