Mediterranean Diet May Decrease Risk of Kidney Disease - Common Heartburn Drug Class Linked to Kidney Disease

Mediterranean Diet May Decrease Risk of Kidney Disease

The Mediterranean diet has been tied to many
health benefits, such as improved heart health.
And now, new research suggests it may also
protect kidney health. I'm Miranda Savioli
with your latest health news.
A Mediterranean diet is one high in fruits,
vegetables, fish, legumes and healthy fats
like olive oil. A recent study found such
a diet lowered patients' risk of chronic kidney
disease. Participants who followed the diet
most closely were about 50 percent less likely
to develop kidney disease than those not on
the diet. They were also less likely to see
rapid decline in kidney function.
Talk to your doctor about whether this is
a viable diet plan for you

Common Heartburn Drug Class Linked to Kidney Disease

Proton pump inhibitors are quickly becoming
the treatment of choice for people suffering
with heartburn and acid reflux, but could
patients be unknowingly putting themselves
at risk for serious complications? I'm Rachelle
Grossman with your latest health news. Two
new studies found that proton pump inhibitors,
or PPI's may increase the risk of chronic
kidney disease. PPIs are a class of drugs
sold under the brand names Prilosec, Nexium,
and Prevacid, among others. The lead study
author says as the popularity of these drugs
increases, health care providers need to be
better educated about the potential side effects
of these drugs. Chronic Kidney Disease is
a condition characterized by a gradual loss
of kidney function over time. It can eventually
progress to end-stage kidney failure, which
is fatal without dialysis or a kidney transplant.
The teams of researchers looked at thousands
of US adults with normal kidney function.
They found that the patients who took PPIs
were more likely to develop Chronic Kidney
Disease compared to those who didn’t take
the drugs. However, it is important to note
that PPIs were also linked to a reduced risk
of vascular disease, cancer, diabetes, high
blood pressure and COPD. Speak with your doctor
if you take PPI's and have any concerns.
